The actual term eczema can stand for a number of different skin conditions that a person may be suffering from. Eczema itself is actually a form of dermatitis, an inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. This condition affects almost everybody at some point or another and the effects can either be mild or quite severe. The good part about this is that eczema is not life-threatening and it does little more than cause some discomfort along with potential embarrassment for individuals that suffer from it. Since there is such a wide variety of types of eczema, here's a list of some of the more common forms and what they do.
Atopic Eczema - this type of eczema typically forms as rash on particular areas of the body, such as the inside of the elbows, scalp, behind the knees and even on the buttocks. It is thought that this is a particular type of eczema that tends to run in families and it may also occur in individuals who tend to have a high level of hayfever allergies. It is also thought that Atopic eczema is often diagnosed whenever an individual is actually suffering from some form of a contact rash. The number of cases of atopic eczema have been on the rise in recent years.
Xerotic Eczema - This is a type of skin condition which occurs as a result of the skin drying out. Although it is common for individuals to have dry skin, particularly in cold weather environments, this type of skin condition becomes so bad that it turns into a type of eczema. This particular type of eczema can get so pronounced that the skin begins to crack and take on the appearance of the way ground looks during a drought.
Discoid Eczema - This is a relatively rare form of eczema and it tends to show up as round or perhaps oval-shaped lesions on the skin. This type of eczema is also quite irritating to those that suffer from it and the itch is said to be one that is irresistible. It is a chronic condition that is recurrent. Discoid Eczema is a type of eczema that can occur at any age but it is usually found in individuals who are over the age of 60. As with many types of skin conditions, keeping the area moisturized can help to clear up the condition or to prevent it from repeating as often.
Autoeczematization - this is a rare skin condition that falls under one of the more unusual types of eczema. This is a rash which occurs as a result of an infection from parasites, bacteria, contact with fungi or viruses. This can be a difficult type of eczema to diagnose because the rash typically appears at an area that is often not near to the area of the infection. Once the initial infection is cleared up, this type of eczema will also clear up naturally.
